Is there anything more shocking that this? As part of a major final season revamp (by Joel Surnow, creator of 24), they killed off the series lead completely out of nowhere. There was no illness, no plot to kill her, she was just a happy woman in love at this point. :hail: Brave move and I don't think I've ever been so shocked by a soap! |

I thought this was a really horrific way to kill Maggie off. Although, IMO, she shouldn't have been killed off in the first place, anyway. |

I didn't witness it, but I think when AMC killed off Jenny, that was pretty shocking. |

I would also say Alice's murder on DAYS was definitely shocking (even though she, and everyone else, turned out to be alive later). |

I wouldn't say Alice because by that point I assumed something was up, although the way it was done was shocking. Frankie's death was shocking in how it was done. However, I consider shocking as in you don't see it coming and there is no speculation whatsoever that it is going to happen. For me, the most shocking is Eve Thornhart on PC. Julie Pinson was a frontburner actress involved in a popular pairing. Her and Lynn Herring carried most of the story load and her exit left a huge void that never got filled. It was just the beginning of PC getting rid of nearly all their interns. Erin Hershey Presley tried to fill the void with Kelly Monaco but it was not the same. The only hint that Pinson was leaving was all the word that hit the mags of her testing for the role of Billie on Days but even then it still hit you like a ton of bricks. I remember that episode. For weeks, they built up the whole "fifth chair" mystery and SOW even had an article placing bets on who it was. The episode of the reveal did not even have Eve in it and then you have Alison fall on the train tracks and I remember totally buying it was going to be her and we would get some sort of heaven story. Then, Paige came out of nowhere and saved her, which fulfilled Paige's purpose. The next scene is in heaven and we see a woman walk in to the room as the camera pans up to reveal Eve. That was a HUGE Friday cliffhanger and the episodes after it were heartbreaking but her death killed PC for me. That, to me, was the most shocking. |

I completely agree about Eve's death. That started the downfall of PC, and the show was not the same afterward. |

The one that took me by surprise happened to a minor character on AW. It was when we learned that Kathleen was alive and in witness protection and she came back to Bay City to find out if Jake was injured because of her (He was in the hospital, but I don't recall why). Kathleen had a "protector" named Joe, who was played by GL's Terrell Anthony (ex-Rusty). Carl was in a restaurant and took a phone call. He said something like, "It's done," and the next thing we saw was Joe lying face up in shallow water with a rope around his neck. I remember saying "HOLY SHIT!" when I saw that. |

When Meredith Wolek died on OLTL, wasn't that death a shock as well? Also when Irna Phillips killed off, I think her name was Katie, on GL in the 50's |

It was Kathy and the studio got bombarded with hate mail! I remember on OLTL when Peter Jannings was killed in a car crash on his way to keep Katrina or somebody from telling Jenny about the baby switch even though Jenny already knew. This really predates spoilers and previews so it came as a total shock. |

I was also really shocked by Jake's death on ATWT. I couldn't believe they killed off the last remaining link to AW (and I can't imagine how pissed off former AW viewers must have been). |

Melissa was one of the highlights of Falcon Crest. It was complete insanity to kill her off. |

By Season 8, Falcon Crest sucked, and in Season 9, the show just became complete garbage (except for the series finale). Killing off Maggie and especially Melissa were fatal mistakes. |

Yes, Cassie's death was very shocking. The show is still feeling the effects from it this very day. Its one of those plot points that will effect the show for years. |

The most shocking deaths for me happened on AW. Back then there were no spoilers and magazines only reported stuff after the affect back then. First off was the death of Mary Matthews. The only soap matriarch to be killed. When she died it was heartbreaking. Then came Steve Frame. George Reinholt & Jacqueline Courtney were the it couple of daytime then. They were the Luke & Laura - the Bo & Hope. To fire them was scandalous but no magazines even hinted at them that I can remember. Comings & goings were reported well after stars left their shows. Then Harding Lemay gave us one more shock in 1978. The firing of Michael M. Ryan who had been on the show since late 1964. He was another long time veteran of the show and a core family son-in-law. Some minor story got leaked out about it the day before the show aired but I didn't see it and the majority of people didn't. This was the day of the first 90 minute episode and Alice Matthews Frame's house was on fire. Her brother-in-law John ran in to save her. She made it out but John didn't. Boy you talk about shock and awe. No one could believe they killed off John. Harding Lemay made a lot of mistakes with the people he fired IMO but he wrote Another World in such a way that you never knew what was going to happen. It was so wonderful. But even a great writer like him I think would have a hard time surviving in this day of spoilers and previews. The great thing about the writing on AW was that you didn't know what was going to happen. And a show like The Edge of Night definitely couldn't work. The biggest thing it had going for it was that you might have ideas of who the killer was but they kept it under wraps until that final moment. |

I remember I was absolutely shocked by the death of Maureen Bauer on Guiding Light. We got superior acting from Peter Simon, Tina Sloan and a few others after her death, but I think it hurt the show in the long haul. |

The most shocking death for me was when April was killed off on Dallas! I loved Bobby and April, and hadn't read anywhere that the actress was leaving. |

Someone mentioned Meredith Lord on OLTL. I'll mention the death of BJ on GH, and the death of real Roman (Wayne Northrup) on Days. Peter Reckell was so great in that last scene. I miss Wayne's Roman to this day. |
